For a long time, I avoided setting big goals.
I’d dress it up as being “realistic.”
Or I’d run the numbers and justify my targets with “statistical averages.”
I’d even set goals that were “attainable” just so I could feel good about hitting them.
But the truth?
I was terrified of failing.
Deep down, I thought if I didn’t hit the goal exactly, I was a failure.
So I’d sandbag.
Keep it safe.
Never stretch.
And you know what happened?
I barely grew.
The shift came when I realized I don’t have to hit 100% to win.
If I set a huge goal and only get 60% of the way there… I’m still miles ahead of where I’d be with a “safe” goal.
That one change flipped the script for me.
It also forced me to face the real root of the fear: old conditioning.
When I was younger, missing the mark had consequences.
Serious ones.
So I wired myself to believe missing = failure.
Not true.
Growth comes from stretching.
From pushing past what feels safe.
So here’s my nudge: stop playing small.
Set goals that scare you.
Even if you fall short, you’ll end up way further than you ever thought possible.
